Liberty VI said on Wednesday that it is set to begin a fiber installation project at Estate Mariendal in St. Thomas. The project, which starts on Monday, Oct. 21, is expected to take approximately nine weeks to complete, and will provide residents in the area with access to high-speed fiber internet.

“As we acquire the necessary permits, we are moving forward with our Fiber to the Home construction projects so more locations in the territory can have access to our fiber fast internet,” said Ravindra Maywahlall, general manager of Liberty VI. He added that the company will continue to inform consumers about upcoming fiber installation projects in other areas of the territory as additional permits are secured.

According to Liberty, the work at Estate Mariendal will involve placing underground conduits and fiber optic cables to deliver Liberty’s Fiber to the Home broadband service. Construction will be carried out on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will involve minimal disruption to traffic, though residents and drivers are advised to expect some delays due to lane and partial road closures. Liberty VI encourages residents to park their vehicles on their properties to avoid obstructions or potential damage during the construction period.

Burying the fiber cables enhances the network’s durability, protecting it from hazards such as natural disasters and vandalism. The construction will utilize a micro-trenching technique, which creates a narrow 1 ¾-inch cut and uses existing ducts where possible, reducing pavement damage and dust emissions. Crews will also employ other underground technologies to minimize the impact on roadways.

Liberty said it will keep the community updated on the progress of the project and will provide information about future fiber installation projects throughout the territory on its website.
