ST. THOMAS — A one-car collision on Sunday morning claimed the life of a 57-year-old woman on the Lionel Berry Drive road in St. Thomas, according to the V.I. Police Department. The accident occurred at approximately 3:55 a.m. near the vicinity of Nadal Grocery.
Emergency services were alerted to the accident by a 911 call. Responding to the scene, officers found a 2019 Toyota Camry that had collided with a concrete pole in front of the Nadal Grocery sign.
The initial investigation conducted by the VIPD revealed that a 59-year-old male was operating the vehicle, traveling westward on Lionel Berry Drive at the time of the incident. The driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the unfortunate crash.
The Camry was occupied by three passengers at the time of the accident. A male was in the front seat while two females, ages 57 and 63, occupied the rear seats. The driver and the male front seat passenger both sustained minor injuries in the collision. The 63-year-old woman in the back seat complained of body-wide pain and was immediately transported by ambulance to the Schneider Regional Medical Center for further medical attention.
The 57-year-old woman, identified as Anita Balani, however, sustained fatal injuries from the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Traffic Investigation Bureau of the St. Thomas District is leading the investigation into the tragic incident.
