ST. THOMAS — A three-car collision on Friday afternoon has led to felony DUI charges for one woman.

Just before 4:00 p.m. on May 26, officers were dispatched to Bluebeard’s Beach Road, near the High  Road intersection to investigate a collision. They made contact with all three drivers, including Katy Jean Smith, who police say was staggering while she walked, and smelled of alcohol. They immediately administered the standardized field sobriety tests. Smith failed the first two and gave up after attempting to stand on one leg. A chemical intoximeter test administered on the scene reportedly resulted in a blood alcohol level of .334, over 4 times the legal limit of .08.

Smith was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and driving with an illegal blood alcohol content. Further investigations revealed that she was driving her white Ford F150 east on Bluebeard’s Beach Road when she swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting two other vehicles. Smith’s truck was disabled by the impacts, and a charge of negligent driving was added.

Katy Jean Smith appeared before the courts on Monday, charged with driving under the influence, driving with an illegal blood alcohol content, and negligent driving. She was granted pretrial release following a cash payment of $1000. Other conditions attached to her release have not yet been made available by the courts.  Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 16.
