ST. THOMAS — Kaydie James has been arrested and charged after police say she violated an active restraining order by blocking her ex-boyfriend’s vehicle at a gas station, throwing objects at the SUV, and later chasing him on Weymouth Rhymer Highway.
Last week, James’s ex-boyfriend reported to police that he was at a gas station on the afternoon of June 30 when he saw his former partner. He told officers he immediately tried to leave, but Ms. James blocked the exit path of his vehicle and began throwing things at his car.
According to the man, Ms. James continued cutting off his attempts to leave while throwing objects at the vehicle until he was able to maneuver over the curb and safely exit the area.
The man’s current girlfriend, who was inside the SUV at the time, corroborated his account. She told police that one of the objects thrown by Ms. James struck her, though it did not cause any injury.
The man also told police that this was not the first time Ms. James had thrown items from her vehicle toward his. He referenced a previous report made last year involving similar behavior.
Officers reviewed surveillance footage from a nearby camera, which they said largely supported the man’s account. The video reportedly showed Ms. James reversing her vehicle to directly block the man’s exit while his vehicle attempted to swerve around her.
On Friday morning, the man called police again to report that Ms. James was following him. He told officers they had encountered each other while driving in opposite directions on Weymouth Rhymer Highway when Ms. James allegedly turned her vehicle around and began chasing him down the road, prompting him to call 911.
Police determined that the reported incidents violated the active restraining order against Ms. James.
When Ms. James appeared at a police station on another matter last Saturday, officers advised her of the allegations. She reportedly promised to return to provide a statement.
Ms. James returned to the Richard Callwood Command police station on Tuesday afternoon, but declined to give a statement to officers. She was then arrested and charged with two counts of contempt of court, stalking, and aggravated stalking, all as crimes of domestic violence.
She was also charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree reckless endangerment, and two counts of disturbance of the peace.
Ms. James was remanded into custody pending her advice of rights hearing. Although no public record of Wednesday’s proceedings before Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull was available as of press time, Ms. James was appointed a public defender and offered bail of some kind.
Her next court appearance has been scheduled for July 24.
