ST. THOMAS — A former employee of Royal American Management, 34-year-old Jalessa Carr, has been arrested and charged on Monday with multiple offenses relating to the theft and cashing of stolen money orders from residents of the Amalie Terrace Apartment Complex.

According to the V.I. Police Department, on May 5, 2022, the Economic Crime Unit, in partnership with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, began an investigation into an incident of obtaining money by false pretenses. The inquiry was instigated after a complaint from Royal American Management that money orders, which belonged to the residents of the aforementioned apartment complex, were stolen.

The investigation found that Carr had deliberately cashed and deposited more than fifteen thousand dollars worth of these money orders into her own personal bank accounts.

The charges pressed against Carr include 26 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses, grand larceny, embezzlement by fiduciary, and embezzlement by employee. The charges come following an arrest warrant issued on October 6, 2023 by the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands.

Carr's bail has been set at $20,000. After her arrest, she was taken to the Richard N. Callwood Command for processing and subsequently transferred to the Bureau of Corrections. She awaits her Advise of Rights hearing, which is scheduled for October 11 at the Superior Court.
