ST. THOMAS — A 23-year-old mother of two is facing criminal charges after she allegedly threw concrete blocks into the home of her children’s father.

A’Jewel Creque is charged with disturbance of the peace and destruction of property as a crime of domestic violence. She was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning after police received a report of a woman breaking windows at a residence. According to the affidavit, when police arrived at the scene, the father of Creque’s two children said that she came to his home at around 3:00 a.m. and began pounding on his front door. The man told police that he answered the door when Creque stated that she came to pick up the children. However, he observed that she appeared to be drunk and consequently informed her that he would drop the children off later that morning, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit further stated that Creque became infuriated and walked to the back of the house where she picked up a concrete cinder block and threw it into the living room and bedroom windows. The responding officer observed broken louvers and glass shards in two areas of the residence. Creque was present on the scene and the officer also made note of the smell of alcohol on her person. She was subsequently arrested and charged.

At a Monday morning hearing, Assistant V.I. Attorney General Brenda Scales requested that Creque’s bail be set at $1000 and that she be ordered not to return to the premises where the incident took place. In response, attorney Alexia Furlow asked that Creque be allowed to post 10 percent of the recommended bail amount, noting that the defendant has two young children. Furlow also asserted that the accused is not a flight risk or an overall danger to the community.

Judge Paula Norkaitis agreed to Creque’s release on the posting of 10 percent of $1000. The defendant has been ordered not to go to the residence occupied by the father of her children and is prohibited from having any unlawful contact with him. While the matter remains pending she has been instructed to continue residing with a relative who has been appointed as her third-party custodian. That relative will also serve as an intermediary between Creque and the alleged victim as it relates to matters involving their children. Noting the time of the incident, judge Norkaitis also placed Creque on a 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew which will allow her to continue her employment. She has also been ordered not to be drunk or abuse alcohol while the matter remains pending.
