Woman Arrested and Jailed After Financially Exploiting Elderly Relative, Police Say

ST. CROIX -- The Virgin Islands Police Department arrested 30-year-old Rashida Bell on Thursday on charges pertaining to exploiting the elderly, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced. She was arrested at 1:31 p.m.

Ms. Bell allegedly forged the signature of an elderly relative without his consent and deposited his check into her account. She was arrested by detectives from the V.I.P.D.'s Economic Crimes Unit.

The suspect was charged with aggravated identity theft, forgery, obtaining money by false pretense, and grand larceny, Mr. Derima said.

Unable to make bail of $50,000, Ms. Bell was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending her advisement hearing.

The V.I.P.D. advised those who prey on seniors, and those seniors who are victims, that the police department will investigate every complaint, and will arrest pending the outcome of the investigation.
