ST. THOMAS — A woman from the Dominican Republic has been arrested and charged with stabbing her partner in the thigh after confronting him over allegations that he had been unfaithful, according to police.
Officers were alerted Tuesday afternoon after receiving a report of a stabbing. They met the injured man at the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center, where he was being treated for a puncture wound to his left thigh.
The man told police that he had returned home during his lunch break when his girlfriend, Asly Olivo, confronted him while shouting accusations that he was cheating. He said he continued walking into the residence, at which point Ms. Olivo allegedly retrieved a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him in the leg.
The man told officers that he then left the residence and returned to his jobsite.
Police also interviewed one of his coworkers, who said he jokingly asked the man, “are you shot?” After learning that his coworker had actually been stabbed, the man contacted police and transported him to the clinic.
The coworker also told officers that the incident may not have been isolated, saying he had previously noticed bruises on the injured man.
Ms. Olivo later arrived at the clinic asking to see her partner. Officers placed her under arrest and charged her with third-degree assault and simple assault and battery, both as crimes of domestic violence, as well as carrying or using dangerous weapons.
Because the charges involved domestic violence, Ms. Olivo was remanded into custody pending her advice-of-rights hearing.
In court Wednesday, Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull found probable cause to uphold the charges.
Bail was set at $15,000, with Ms. Olivo permitted to post 11 percent in cash and the remainder as an unsecured bond. If released, she must report in person to the Leander Jurgen Command twice each week and comply with standard bail conditions, including vacating the residence where the alleged assault occurred.
Ms. Olivo is scheduled to return to court on September 18.
