ST. CROIX – A woman who armed herself with a baseball bat before joining a fight on behalf of her friend has added to her legal woes with fresh charges.
Jazzmine Ferdinand, already before the courts on accusations of forgery dating back to July and assault charges from a separate incident in November, was arrested on Wednesday following reports of an assault.
According to court documents, police were dispatched that evening to Amigo's Gas Station, where they met a woman who was visibly injured. She told officers that two women had attacked her, one with a baseball bat.
The woman told police that earlier, she was in the parking lot of a nearby police station speaking to an officer who was a friend of hers. Another woman reportedly walked out of the station and made a hostile remark towards her before getting into a vehicle and driving off.
A short while later, the injured woman said she was at the gas station when the same vehicle pulled up, with the other woman from earlier and Jazzmine Ferdinand. The alleged victim said she went into the convenience store with Ferdinand, but when she came back out, she was attacked. The woman told police that the two women inside the vehicle intentionally ran over her foot before getting out to assault her, one armed with a baseball bat.
The woman told police that she was struck several times in the head, as well as all over the body. She reported light-headedness from the attack, and police took note of contusions, lacerations, and dried blood on her face, head, arms, and legs.
The two other women admitted to police that they fought the alleged victim, contending that she provoked the altercation by coming out of the convenience store and slapping the woman with whom she had exchanged words earlier. Surveillance camera footage corroborated their version of events, however, Ferdinand was ultimately arrested and charged with third-degree assault, simple assault and battery.
A bail hearing was scheduled last Friday.
