ST. THOMAS — A St. Thomas woman is facing domestic violence-related charges after police say she broke into her ex-girlfriend’s home, assaulted her, took her phone, and later returned to the residence weeks later and attacked her again.
According to court documents, police were first alerted to the matter in March, when the alleged victim went to the station to file a report. She told officers that she had been asleep one morning when she heard a loud sound. Immediately afterward, she said, someone was on top of her, yelling and throwing punches.
The woman identified the intruder as Kenisha George, her ex-girlfriend.
According to the woman, George was pulled off her by a female friend who had also been sleeping in the bed. George then reportedly took the woman’s phone and threw it to the ground before going through dresser drawers, pulling out clothing and tossing it aside.
The alleged victim told police that George assaulted her several more times, at one point leaving the residence and returning to continue the physical altercation.
The woman said her phone was returned three days later, after George turned it over to the landlord.
The third woman who was in the room during the incident later corroborated the alleged victim’s account during a visit to police in mid-May. She told officers that George broke in through the bedroom window and began attacking her ex-girlfriend. Police were also provided with video recordings that they say supported the account.
Last Friday, the alleged victim called 911 to request police assistance at her residence. When officers arrived, they found her wearing a torn T-shirt with what appeared to be small bloodstains.
The woman told police that George had returned to the residence before sunrise, knocking on the door and yelling her name. When she got up to investigate, she said she found George standing outside the bedroom window, reportedly trying to open it again.
As the woman attempted to call 911, George allegedly climbed through the window, entered the home and attacked her again.
Police say at least two reports have been filed against George by the alleged victim.
George was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary and simple assault as crimes of domestic violence. She was also charged with disturbance of the peace and remanded into custody pending her advice of rights hearing.
During her court appearance on Tuesday, Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull found probable cause to uphold the charges. Bail was set at $1,000, with half required in cash to secure Ms. George’s release ahead of trial.
Once released, Ms. George must report to the probation office in person twice a week and comply with other standard bail conditions. Her next court appearance is scheduled for June 12.
