ST. CROIX — A St. Croix man was arrested on a first-degree assault charge after police said surveillance footage captured him firing two shots at a neighbor during a dispute in the Estate St. John residential area.
According to the V.I. Police Department, the 911 Emergency Call Center received reports of shots fired at about 8:27 a.m. on Dec. 24. VIPD said the victim called 911 and reported that his neighbor, Yahya Daniel, had fired shots at him.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau were assigned to investigate. VIPD said the incident began while Daniel was cutting grass along the boundary between his fence line and the victim’s. Police said the victim approached and threw gravel in Daniel’s direction, causing him to stop. VIPD said the victim then picked up another piece of gravel and threw it, striking Daniel.
Police said Daniel then drew his licensed firearm and fired two shots at the victim. VIPD reported that surveillance footage was obtained showing what occurred.
Daniel, 46, was advised of his Miranda Rights and arrested for first-degree assault, VIPD said. He was booked, and bail was set at $100,000.
VIPD said Daniel later secured release with clearance from a Superior Court judge. As part of the release conditions, Daniel was ordered to post $200 of the bail, relinquish all firearms, and reside with a third-party custodian under house arrest pending an Advice of Rights hearing scheduled for Dec. 26 in Superior Court.
