ST. CROIX — A St. Croix man initially sought by police in an attempted murder case is now back in custody after authorities say he fled police escort following his arrest and was later recaptured in Christiansted.
According to the V.I. Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, Keshawn Louis, 28, was first arrested on an attempted murder charge tied to an Tuesday incident in Estate Grove Place, then charged a second time after allegedly escaping from custody during transport to the John A. Bell Correctional Facility.
The case began on April 28, at about 10:58 a.m., when the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report of a robbery and shooting in Estate Grove Place, Frederiksted.
Police units responded, and a detective with the Criminal Investigation Bureau was assigned to investigate.
According to the press release, detectives made contact with Louis at the scene. Police said he told investigators that while he was operating his vehicle, someone shot at him, causing him to lose control and crash into a cement wall.
However, the release states that further investigation revealed Louis had assaulted an adult male with his vehicle, causing injuries to the victim.
On Wednesday at approximately 5:51 p.m., Louis was apprehended and transported to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, where he was charged, arrested, and processed for attempted murder.
Police said that while he was being escorted for transport to the John A. Bell Correctional Facility, Louis fled from police custody.
The release states that an immediate search was carried out, but officers were unable to locate him at that time.
On Thursday at 2:54 p.m., detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau apprehended Louis in the Gentle Winds area of Christiansted.
He was then transported back to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, where police said he was charged, arrested, and processed for escape from jail or custody of an officer.
According to VIPD, Louis was unable to post bail and was remanded to the John A. Bell Correctional Facility pending his Advice of Rights hearing, which is scheduled for May 1 in Superior Court.
