ST. THOMAS — A confrontation between VIPD officers and a suspect turned deadly after the suspect — who reportedly opened fire on the officers — was fatally shot.

The VIPD said it is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, which began as a response to an attempted robbery in the Market Square area.
Police received a call at approximately 4:47 p.m. regarding an attempted robbery. Officers who were dispatched to the scene soon encountered an individual in the vicinity of Market Square. According to the police report, this individual discharged several shots at the responding officers, and in a critical response to the immediate threat, the officers returned fire.
The exchange of gunfire led to the suspect being fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead at the scene. This intense situation has prompted a full investigation by the VIPD Criminal Investigation Bureau to understand the complete circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The deceased suspect was identified as 28-year-old Troy Jameson Normil by next of kin. A bystander sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the exchange between police and Normil, according to new information provided by the VIPD on Sunday.

This incident highlights the often unpredictable and dangerous nature of law enforcement response, especially in situations involving armed individuals.
