ST. THOMAS — The V.I. Police Department said on Sunday that it is actively investigating a reported case of aggravated rape involving a minor, following a report received Saturday afternoon on St. Thomas.
According to the VIPD, detectives and officers were dispatched to the Schneider Regional Medical Center at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, after receiving a report of a sexual assault. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the minor female victim and her mother.
Preliminary information provided by police indicates that the alleged incident occurred inside the victim’s residence between approximately 11:00 p.m. on Friday, December 12, and 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13. The victim reported that the suspect used physical force during the incident. The suspect was described by police as an adult male who is known to the victim’s family.
Medical personnel were notified, and the victim was advised of available support services and resources, the department said.
The investigation is being handled by the VIPD's Domestic Violence Unit and remains ongoing. Due to the sensitive nature of the case and in order to protect the privacy of the victim, police said no additional details will be released at this time.
The VIPD is urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact 911, the Domestic Violence Unit at (340) 715-5535, or the Office of the Police Chief. Tips may be provided anonymously.
The department also encouraged victims of sexual violence and their families to seek assistance and reaffirmed that reports of sexual crimes are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.
