ST. CROIX — A man was shot and killed during a robbery incident in Williams Delight on the Queen Mary Highway Saturday night, after two victims got into a struggle with one of two robbery suspects, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.

According to the news release, the 911 Emergency Call Center received notification of shots fired at about 7:45 p.m. Later at about 8:06 p.m., another report came in regarding a gunshot victim who was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital.

Mr. Derima said officers learned that a robbery occurred outside the Queen Bee Grocery Store in Williams Delight where two male victims reported that two suspects drove up in a black sedan while pointing a rifle at them. The suspects took money from the victims, and one suspect left the area in a victim’s vehicle while the other got into a struggle with the victims, at which point a gunshot was discharged, according to the news release. The shot struck and killed the victim, identified as 37-year-old Kareem Smith of Salt River.

The second suspect left the area in the black sedan, according to the release.

According to Mr. Derima, detectives are investigating both cases to determine if they are related. Anyone with information on either case can call 911, the Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950, or Crime Stoppers USVI at (800) 222-TIPS or online at crimestoppersusvi.org.
