ST. CROIX — A Venezuelan woman who was deported from the United States last February was arrested on Friday after turning up at St. Croix's Henry E. Rohlsen airport.

According to court documents, Norianni Linarez-Lugo was at the airport around 8:00 a.m. on August 29, seeking to travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Upon encountering Customs and Border Protection officials, she reportedly admitted to not having legal immigration status in the United States. Ms. Lugo also disclosed that she had been deported in February 2024.

Further investigation indicated that Ms. Lugo was picked up by U.S. Border Patrol in December 2023 on the southern border of the mainland United States. As a result of her deportation proceedings, she was barred from re-entering the U.S. for five years.

Having returned to the country before the five-year term had elapsed, Ms. Lugo was arrested and charged with re-entry by an alien after removal.

She made her initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Emile Henderson III on the day of her arrest, and will return for a detention hearing on September 2. Prosecutors have asked that Ms. Lugo be detained pending trial, claiming that she poses a flight risk.
