The 73rd person in the U.S. Virgin Islands to die from complications related to the Covid-19 virus was announced Friday by the V.I. Dept. of Health.

"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s seventy-third death related to COVID-19. The deceased is a 78-year-old female on St. Croix," D.O.H. said in a release.

The department said it continues to work to slow the spread of Covid-19, and it called on residents to continue following precautionary measures: practice social distancing, wear a mask when in company of others outside of those in your household, clean frequently used areas thoroughly, and wash your hands often with soap and warm water.

As of Friday there were 154 active cases territory-wide: 129 on St. Croix, 23 on St. Thomas, and 2 on St. John.

According to the New York Times realtime Covid-19 tracker, only 45 percent of Virgin Islanders were vaccinated as of Friday, among the lowest in the United States.
