ST. CROIX — A traffic stop operation executed by the V.I.P.D. on Saturday in Work & Rest led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man for unauthorized possession of a firearm, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima announced Monday.

The arrest of D'Andre Gumbs, a resident of Strawberry Hill, was made Saturday at about 8:21 p.m. by officers of the Special Operations Bureau, Mr. Derima said.

According to the news release, officers observed a firearm in a vehicle operated by Gumbs during the traffic stop. Gumbs does not have a license to possess, carry, or own a firearm in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and was arrested as a result.

Unable to make bail of $50,000, Gumbs was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending his advisement hearing.

St. Croix District Chief of Police Sidney Elskoe commended the officers of the Special Operations Bureau, led by Commander Captain Dennis Vanterpool, for the discovery of the firearm and the subsequent arrest. “We intend to keep up the pressure on those persons who want to illegally possess firearms. We will take those guns and arrest those persons when we find them,” said Chief Elskoe.

He encouraged the community to contact the VIPD with information on crimes by calling 911, the Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950, or Crime Stoppers USVI at (800) 222-TIPS. Remember, if you see something, say something.
