A suspect involved in a 2019 shooting that resulted in four people being seriously injured is back in the custody of territorial authorities.‌

According to a VIPD press release, Renaldo Philbert Jr. (spelled Reynaldo in court documents) was identified as a suspect in a shots fired incident at the David Hamilton Jackson Housing Community. Four people were shot in the incident, with one victim reportedly becoming a paraplegic due to the extent of their injuries.

Philbert was given permission to travel to Florida after being arrested for the shooting, and while on the mainland, was arrested in Orange County on kidnap and robbery charges. He pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm and was sentenced to four years in prison in April 2022, with 409 days credit for time already served. ‘

‌According to the VIPD, he was released into their custody after completing his sentence, and extradited to the Virgin Islands on August 31, where he was promptly arrested for attempted murder, first-degree assault, mayhem, and firearm offenses.‌

Unable to pay the $100,000 bail assessed, he was remanded into custody until his advice of rights hearing, which occurred on Monday before Judge Douglas Brady. However, as of press time, details of the proceedings and the pretrial release order have not been published by the court.
