Suspect Arrested in Market Square Homicide, VIPD Praises Community Co-operation

ST. THOMAS — One day after Marcos Antonion Benjamin Guerrero was gunned down near Market Square, St. Thomas, the Virgin Island Police Department has made an arrest in the matter.

A statement from the VIPD indicates that co-operation from the community resulted in the arrest of Luis Manuel Mota Rivas at 2 pm on January 16th.

Mr. Rivas is alleged to have ambushed Mr. Guerrero as he sat in his car, shooting the seated man several times. Guerrero, who had just left a restaurant and bar downtown, was first attended to by Emergency Medical Technicians on the scene before being transported to the Schneider Regional Hospital for medical attention, however he succumbed to his injuries. 

Mr. Rivas, age 30,  was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault, and use of a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime of violence. He was remanded into custody to await his advisement hearing in court.
