ST. THOMAS — A man accused of beating up his girlfriend and taking her phone now faces criminal charges.
Just before 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a man walked into the Mariel C. Newton Command police station asking for help. His friend had called him on her tablet, he said, and told him that her boyfriend Kasheem Sonny had hit her and confiscated her cell phone.
Police followed him to a residence on Anna’s Retreat, where they met the woman involved. She told them that she and Sonny had been arguing about her vehicle, first on the phone and then in person at home once she arrived at about 10:30 that evening.
According to court documents, during the argument, she said her boyfriend slapped her in the mouth area twice, and then grabbed her hair and pushed her head into the wall when she tried to get out of the bedroom and to her phone. The woman told police that she fell to the floor and her boyfriend grabbed her shirt and tried to drag her while she fought back. Able to fend him off, the woman said she got to the phone and tried to call the police, but Sonny grabbed the phone out of her hands and left. That’s when, using her tablet, she called her friend for help, the woman told officers.
A little while later, the woman said Sonny had returned to gather his belongings and so she called the police herself, using her cell phone she spotted on top of the couch where Sonny had placed it.
Police noted a bump on the left side of her face, near the temple area. The woman said this was not the first time she’d had such an altercation
When police made contact with Sonny, he refused to make a statement, and was subsequently arrested and charged with simple assault as an act of domestic violence, and disturbance of the peace via threats. In court on Wednesday, Sonny was released on his own recognizance while he awaits arraignment.
