ST. CROIX — Shots rang out last night in the Grove Place area — 75 in total, according to the VIPD's ShotSpotter technology — leading to a car crash and subsequent hospitalization of the victim, who was grazed in the head by a bullet.
The V.I. Police Department said it received multiple notifications from ShotSpotter around 10:14 p.m. Friday.
Officers arrived on the scene and began canvassing the area, when a 911 call informed them of a gunshot victim near 310 Grove Place. The victim was found after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a tree. He reported that a white SUV had driven past and fired shots at him and his friends, who were on their way home to Mutual Homes.
After being treated for his injuries at the Juan F. Luis Hospital, the victim was released. VIPD officers processed the scene, searching for additional victims, witnesses, and suspects. The investigation is ongoing and authorities are actively pursuing leads, according to the department.
