ST. CROIX — A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder after shooting his sister in the chest with an AK47, according to VIPD Criminal Investigation Bureau Commander, Lt. Naomi Joseph. The shooting occurred in the Marley Housing Apartments on Monday afternoon.
"A couple inches to the right and she would have been dead," Comdr Joseph said, adding that the victim was in stable but serious condition as of Tuesday morning. She said the bullets missed all the victim's vital organs.
According to the commander, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday, the 911 Emergency Call Center received calls reporting gunshots at the Marley Housing Apartments. Responding officers arrived on the scene to find a female victim with a gunshot wound to her chest. The victim was immediately transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital, where she is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Investigating officers from the Criminal Investigation Bureau were informed by community members that the suspect, identified as Calvin Parker, the victim's brother, had been involved in an argument with the victim prior to the shooting. Parker allegedly became enraged during the dispute and shot his sister in the chest.
After the shooting, an all-points bulletin was issued for Parker's arrest. On Tuesday at approximately 12:45 a.m., Parker turned himself in at the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station. He was placed under arrest without incident after being advised of his Miranda Rights.
Parker has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree assault, carrying a firearm openly or concealed, and aiming and discharging a firearm. His bail has been set at $100,000. Unable to post bail, Parker has been transported to the John Bell Correctional Facility.
Parker is scheduled for his Advice of Rights Hearing at the Superior Court on June 7.
