ST. CROIX — A local man has been arrested following an alleged burglary and attempted sexual assault in a private residence, according to the V.I. Police Department's Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Early Monday morning on July 17, at approximately 6:26 a.m., a distress call to the 911 Emergency Call Center sparked the investigation. The caller reported that a man named Osei Edwards had forcibly entered her home and attempted to sexually assault her while she was asleep. She mentioned her effort to fend off the attacker by grabbing a knife in self-defense.
Responding swiftly, members of the CIB launched an investigation into the incident. The victim positively identified Edwards as the intruder who had unlawfully entered her residence and made the alleged sexual assault attempt.
Upon contact with the accused, Edwards was read his Miranda Rights. The 23-year-old man conceded that he had indeed visited the victim's home with the intention of retrieving an item. However, he did not clarify further or mention whether he had any lawful reason for his actions.
Subsequently, Edwards was arrested and charged with multiple counts including first-degree burglary, unlawful sexual contact, unlawful entry, simple assault and battery, and destruction to property. Unable to post his bail set at $75,000, he was detained at the John Bell Correctional Facility.
The suspect is due to attend his Advice of Rights hearing at the Superior Court on July 19.
