ST. CROIX — A routine traffic stop by a VIPD K9 officer led to the arrest of a man for illegal gun possession on Thursday.

The stop occurred near New Breed Farm on Queen Mary Highway. The 25-year-old driver, Darius George, Jr., was found to be carrying a handgun with an extended magazine after he was pulled over for a traffic violation.

The officer initiated the traffic stop at approximately 1:54 p.m. after observing the vehicle overtake another car on a stretch of road marked with a double solid yellow line, a clear violation of traffic laws. While speaking to George, the officer detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and noticed several burnt marijuana cigarettes in the car's ashtray.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the handgun, which was found inside a brown and black Coach bag located on the driver’s seat. George, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was detained on the scene.

He was later arrested and charged with carrying of a firearm openly or concealed, as well as possession of ammunition. His bail has been set at $50,000, in accordance with the bail chart.
