ST. THOMAS — A St. Thomas man is facing domestic violence-related charges after police say his wife suffered a cut to her hand during a confrontation involving a kitchen knife inside their Estate Frydenhoj home. Although the man reportedly told officers the injury was the result of a “joke that went wrong,” his wife maintained that he had been trying to harm her.
According to court documents, police were called to the residence on Monday night and made contact with a woman who reported that her husband, Davis Bryan, had assaulted her with a knife.
According to the woman, she and her husband had been sitting on the couch when he began accusing her of infidelity. During the argument that followed, she admitted to using profanity, but said the situation escalated while her husband was holding a kitchen knife and using it to peel an orange. She told police that he swung the knife toward her, and when she raised her hand to protect herself, the blade struck her right palm, causing a laceration.
When officers questioned Bryan, he reportedly corroborated his wife’s account, but said the injury was accidental. Police say he described the incident as a “joke that went wrong,” and said his question about infidelity grew out of a lack of intimacy in the relationship. After realizing his wife had been injured, Bryan told officers that he wrapped and bandaged the wound.
Despite that explanation, the woman reportedly insisted that her husband had been trying to hurt her. Police also learned that although the couple lives in the same house, they appear to be estranged or separated.
Bryan was arrested and charged with third-degree assault as a crime of domestic violence, possession of a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence, and disturbance of the peace. He was remanded into custody and appeared before Magistrate Juie Todman Smith on March 24 for an advice of rights hearing.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, the judge set bail at $15,000 cash or property valued at no less than $30,000. If he is able to post bail, Bryan will be required to report in person to the probation office each week and comply with the standard conditions of release.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 10.
