ST. JOHN — A man who reportedly relies on a wheelchair for mobility was arrested after allegedly pulling a gun during an altercation.
According to court documents, police were alerted to a disturbance near the post office on Wednesday afternoon. Responding officers found two men grappling on the ground. They separated the men, removing a black handgun from the hands of Shakoi Mactavious. The other man remained belligerent, and was placed in handcuffs for safety.
Bystanders informed police that Mactavious, whose white t-shirt was reportedly drenched in blood, struck his adversary with the butt of the gun. For his part, Mactavious reportedly protested that he was only 27 while his opponent was “a grown man.”
After he removed his shirt, officers noted that Mactavious had suffered only superficial injuries. The other man, however, had received deep lacerations to the forehead and left side of the head. Despite his more serious injuries, he was reluctant to go seek medical care until a bystander offered to transport him. “I never expected a man in a wheelchair to pull a gun on me,” he reportedly told officers.
Mactavious declined to give a statement and was ultimately arrested and charged with third-degree assault and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. It is unclear at this time whether the firearm was licensed.
As he was unable to post the initial $25,000 bail, Mactavious was remanded into custody to await his first court appearance. No information on the outcome of his advice of rights hearing, scheduled for Thursday morning before Magistrate Paula Norkaitis, has been forthcoming as of press time.
