ST. CROIX — A man is facing domestic violence assault charges for allegedly using a broken broomstick to hit his mother during a dispute.

Police were called to a Constitution Hill residence on Wednesday evening, and spoke to a woman who said that her adult son had assaulted her earlier that afternoon.

Alli Parris had come to his mother's house to cut grass. During his work, he reportedly asked his 11-year old nephew to fetch something from his vehicle and was met with a raised voice. This upset Parris, who reportedly called the boy disrespectful and urged his mother to discipline the child in front of him. The boy's grandmother apparently chose to verbally counsel the boy instead of the consequence Parris had demanded.

Still in a foul mood, Parris is said to have then demanded a sum of money that his mother owed him. His sister gave him the money, however he reportedly refused to take it from her, demanding that his mother give it to him herself. That prompted an aggressive confrontation between son and mother, with Parris raising his voice, cursing, and pointing his fingers in the older woman's face.

The woman told police that she eventually pushed her son to regain some personal space, and that set off a shoving match between them. Parris reportedly then grabbed a broomstick, broke it, and swung it at his mother, striking her in the back. The woman's husband and daughter were finally able to separate the pair, after which Parris reportedly threatened to take his aggression out on her vehicle instead. The woman told police that she watched through the window as he carried out his threat, puncturing tires with a knife.

Parris’ sister confirmed her mother's account of the incident, and police saw the end result of his rage; two flat tires on the vehicle outside, with blood on one of them from where Parris had evidently cut himself with the knife.

When approached, Parris declined to provide a statement to police and was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery as a crime of domestic violence. The laceration to his palm required medical attention, and after refusing an ambulance, Parris was transported to hospital by officers. He reportedly received several stitches on his right palm before being discharged and remanded into custody to await his advice of rights hearing.

Apart from assault, Parris is also charged with destruction of property as a crime of domestic violence, disturbance of the peace and damaging a vehicle.

He is due in court on Friday morning, where Magistrate Venetia Velazquez will determine whether there is probable cause to uphold the charges against him.
