ST. CROIX — A man who had recently separated from the mother of his child was arrested Friday after allegedly assaulting her in the presence of his parents and their minor child.
According to court documents, the woman reported the incident to police last week. She told officers that on Wednesday she went to the Williams Delight residence of Shalom Fenton Sr. to pick up their child. The couple had ended their relationship after several years together, and she said Fenton was not coping well with the breakup.
After picking up the child and leaving the residence, the woman said Fenton called to say that some of the baby’s belongings had been left behind. She returned to retrieve the items, at which point he handed them over and then allegedly snatched her phone from her hand, demanding to know who she had been speaking with.
The woman told police that when she exited her vehicle to demand the return of her phone, Fenton pushed her away. She said she grabbed onto his pants in an attempt to stop him, at which point he allegedly grabbed her by the neck and began squeezing. Struggling to breathe, the woman said she released her grip, after which Fenton allegedly spit in her face and then released his hold on her neck. Officers observed fresh bruising around her neck.
The woman reported that Fenton’s mother was present during the incident. She also said his father, who was inside the home, shouted at his son to return the phone, using a derogatory term commonly used to describe female canines.
Police located Fenton at his residence the following day. He was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and simple assault and battery as crimes of domestic violence. He also faces charges of throwing bodily fluid or waste at a person and disturbing the peace by fighting.
