ST. THOMAS — A man who resides at a senior care home is facing criminal charges for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, who also lives at the facility.

According to court documents, police were dispatched to the Lucinda Millin Home on Sunday morning to investigate a reported assault. They made contact with a woman who said that she had returned from hospital a short while ago, where she had stayed overnight.

The woman said she'd traveled back from the hospital with her boyfriend Julien King, who also lives in the home. As soon as she arrived home, she went to bed for some rest but allowed King inside her apartment. The man reportedly began to accuse her of being unfaithful and at some point began to choke her while she lay on the bed, according to court documents.

The woman told police that as King choked her, she became unable to breathe. He reportedly stopped before she lost consciousness, left her unit, and went to his apartment across the hall. The woman told police that she was shocked and scared by her boyfriend’s behavior.

When police visited King in his apartment, he admitted to accusing his girlfriend of “messing” with other men, but said that she spit on him after he confronted her. That was when he used his hand on the woman’s neck to push her away, he told police, denying that he choked his girlfriend.

Police took note of the redness around the woman’s neck and the bruising on the right side of her face, which the woman said was sustained after her knee gave out on her, causing her to fall.

King was ultimately arrested and charged with second-degree assault and simple assault, both as acts of domestic violence. He was also charged with disturbance of the peace by threats, and was remanded into custody to await his first court appearance.

In court on Monday, Magistrate Paula Norkaitis found probable cause to uphold the charges against King, and ordered that he be released ahead of trial on an unsecured bond of $1000. He will be barred from contacting the alleged victim, and must report to the probation office every week by telephone.

Mr. King’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 26.
