ST. CROIX — A second victim of the shooting incident outside the Climax Sportsbar and Nightclub in Peter's Rest on Sunday has died, the V.I. Police Department has confirmed to the Consortium.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Ja'yomi Roberts, was in critical condition after being shot and was airlifted from the Juan F. Luis Hospital to a medical facility in Florida, according to the V.I.P.D. He died Thursday.
The first deceased victim, who succumbed to gunshot injuries on the scene, was identified as 19-year-old Jahmari Joshawn Santiago by next of kin.
A third victim is in a Florida hospital receiving treatment, according to the Police Department, and is said to be "in stable but guarded condition." A victim in stable but guarded condition is described as one with a life-threatening injury whose vital signs have been stabilized and is now well-supported, but is still in danger.
In total, six individuals were shot, two have died, three have been released after being treated, and one remains hospitalized.
"Investigation disclosed that the club was closing and the patron was exiting when gunshot rang out. At this time we do not know the reason for the discharging of shots at this time," the V.I.P.D. said in a statement Sunday following the shooting.
The 911 Emergency Call Center received the first report of the incident at 4:49 a.m. Sunday, the department said.
Governor Albert Bryan on Monday addressed the shooting, calling for peace, tolerance and consideration in wake of what he called a tragic weekend. According to the governor, there is nothing ordinary about consoling grief-stricken families in the wake of senseless killings. He offered sincere condolences to the families and extended prayers. In his public statement, Mr. Bryan stressed that these incidents within such a small community leave in their wake a collective grief as all residents are so intimately connected. He also implored the community to "take things down a notch" and take a moment to reflect and give some love back to fellow residents.
