ST. THOMAS — Police have arrested a second person in connection with the July 1 brawl at the Urman Victor Fredericks Terminal in Red Hook that left a woman hospitalized after she was assaulted by at least three people.
T-Kori Deshalto faces third-degree assault, simple assault and disturbance of the peace charges after police identified him during their continuing investigation into the confrontation.
The altercation began on St. John as crowds waited to board the ferry to St. Thomas following carnival festivities. The fight later resumed at the Red Hook terminal, where the woman was assaulted and subsequently hospitalized.
Kahiyla Charles was arrested approximately one week after the incident and charged with assault.
At that stage of the investigation, police had been unable to identify a man reportedly captured on surveillance footage stomping on the injured woman’s face and body.
Police Receive Information on Man's Identity
On July 23, officers received information regarding the man’s identity.
Investigators initially attempted to locate records for a person identified as “Tikori Jarvis,” but could find no information under that name in territorial records.
On Aug. 7, police identified the man as T-Kori Deshalto and went to his residence.
Deshalto was not home at the time. Officers instead instructed his mother to tell him to report to the police station when he returned.
Deshalto appeared at the Richard Callwood Command police station on the evening of Aug. 11.
He declined to provide a statement regarding the July 1 incident.
Police then arrested Deshalto and charged him with third-degree assault, simple assault and disturbance of the peace.
Unable to meet the initial $25,000 bail requirement, he was remanded into custody pending his advice of rights hearing.
Magistrate Finds Probable Cause
Deshalto appeared in court Tuesday before Magistrate Julie Smith Todman.
Smith Todman found probable cause to uphold the charges but modified the conditions necessary for his release before trial.
Deshalto was permitted to post 10 percent of the $25,000 bail in cash, with the remaining amount signed as an unsecured bond.
Once released from detention, he must report in person to the probation office every week and comply with the other standard bail conditions imposed by the court.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 28.
Charles’ case stemming from the same July 1 brawl continues to move through the court system.
