ST. THOMAS — Police have made a second arrest in connection with a brutal assault that was captured on tape last October.
The incident, which occurred in the female bathroom of the Crown Bay Center, was the assault of a female hairdresser by multiple people. The violence was filmed by the woman’s attackers and the resulting video was seen by thousands after it was shared on social media.
VIPD detectives received a copy of the video, and were able to identify Imai Demming as the main aggressor. She turned herself in approximately two weeks ago, and now faces charges of assault and reckless endangerment.
Through the video, police also identified Olassie Brewer as a participant in the assault. Mr. Brewer was the one who filmed the altercation, they say. He stopped recording only to prevent the victim’s friend from trying to separate Ms. Demming from her target. Brewer began assaulting the friend himself, police say.
After the assault was quelled by a male bystander who separated the parties. Brewer reportedly attempted to apologize to Ms. Demming’s target, however she rebuffed him and went to the police station to file a report.
Brewer turned up at the Richard Callwood Command police station on Monday afternoon to surrender himself. He reportedly declined to provide a statement and was subsequently charged with aiding and abetting third-degree assault, aiding and abetting simple assault, aiding and abetting second-degree reckless endangerment, and aiding and abetting disturbing the peace by fighting. Unable to pay the initial $25,000 bail, he was remanded into custody until his advice of rights hearing.
In court on Wednesday, Magistrate Julie Smith Todman found probable cause to uphold the charges against Mr. Brewer. She ordered that he be allowed to post 5% of the bail requirement in cash to secure his release ahead of trial, with the remainder to be posted as an unsecured bond.
Once free from detention, Brewer will be required to report to the probation office each week by telephone, with the first visit in person. The other usual bail conditions will also apply, including a stipulation to remain at least 20 feet from the alleged victim at all times, and prohibitions against the use of controlled substances and the possession of dangerous weapons.
The next court date for Mr. Brewer is scheduled for February 27.
