Puerto Rico Driver Flees Scene of Car Crash in Stolen Ambulance

Hit-and-run accidents are not uncommon, but what happened in Puerto Rico’s capital on Monday appears to be a first: A man involved in a minor car accident fled the scene in an ambulance that had arrived to help him, police said.

According to Police Lt. Elvis Zeno, the incident occurred on one of Puerto Rico’s busiest highways when the unidentified man hit another car in a minor fender-bender. An ambulance was called out of precaution, but when the police officer at the scene was surveying the damage and taking notes, the suspect took advantage of the opportunity to jump into the ambulance and flee.

Authorities say that police pursued the suspect from San Juan to the nearby city of Caguas, but only found the abandoned ambulance. Zeno said it’s the first time he has heard of such an incident, and added, “People have lost their values. They don’t value life or safety.”

As of Monday evening, police were still searching for the suspect, noting that he was traveling alone when the accident occurred.
