ST. JOHN — A St. Thomas woman was arrested and charged after police say she pushed, pulled away from and assaulted an officer while officers were trying to control a disorderly crowd during the St. John Celebration Jouvert event near the Lumber Yard in Cruz Bay.

According to a V.I. Police Department press release, Carla Jeffers, 48, of St. Thomas, was arrested at 8:30 a.m. on July 3. Her bail was set at $1,000, which was later paid.

VIPD said that, in the vicinity of the Lumber Yard in Cruz Bay, several physical altercations involving members of the public were occurring. While officers attempted to maintain control of the crowd and prevent additional fights, Jeffers was allegedly pulling away from and pushing a police officer.

Police said she was also observed yelling loudly at the officer.

According to VIPD, officers attempted to gain control of Jeffers, but she continued to violently swing her arms, assaulting an officer. Police said she was given loud verbal commands to move back, but remained loud and continued swinging her arms “in a wild and violent manner.”

She was subsequently handcuffed and placed under arrest for aggravated assault and battery upon an officer, interfering with an officer discharging her duties, and disturbing the peace; fighting.

Jeffers’s Advice of Rights hearing is scheduled for Monday, July 6 at 9:00 a.m.
