ST. CROIX — A 50-year-old man identified as Daniel Ramos has been arrested and charged in connection with a broad-daylight robbery on Saturday at the ib designs jewelry store on Company Street in Christiansted, the V.I. Police Department confirmed to the Consortium. Ramos, who was also arrested earlier this year at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport while attempting to leave the territory after allegedly stealing an air conditioning unit and blower from The Home Depot, now faces multiple charges related to the jewelry store incident.
According to the VIPD's Criminal Investigation Bureau, a concerned caller reported a robbery in progress at approximately 2:35 p.m., and detectives were dispatched to the scene to investigate.
An initial investigation revealed that Ramos entered the store claiming he wanted to purchase a gold bracelet. When an employee presented a display of jewelry pieces, the suspect asked to see another item. As the employee turned around, Ramos allegedly grabbed the jewelry from the display case and ran out of the store.
A bystander attempted to stop him, leading to a physical struggle outside the store. During the altercation, a store employee managed to take several photos of the suspect. Ramos eventually broke free and escaped, but in his haste, he left behind key personal items — including his cell phone, a shoe, and other belongings.
Those items helped police identify him. Officers confirmed Ramos’s identity using the photos taken at the scene and through a phone call to the cell phone he left behind.
Ramos was located at his residence in Clifton Hill later that afternoon and arrested at approximately 5:17 p.m. He was transported to the Wilbur Francis Command Police Station, where he was booked and charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree robbery, and grand larceny.
He was subsequently taken to the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility, where he remains pending his Advice of Rights Hearing scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands.
His bail was set at $50,000, according to the VIPD.
The investigation was led by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau under the command of Lieutenant Marisol Colon, who confirmed the details in an official statement.
