ST. CROIX — A fugitive on the run from Florida authorities was apprehended today in St. Croix, the V.I. Police Department has announced.
Shakir Jaahsine Noel, 29, was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Hillsborough County, Florida, in connection with his escape from the custody of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department. Noel managed to evade the Florida authorities and make his way to St. Croix.
Detectives from the V.I.P.D.'s Criminal Investigation unit received information that Noel might be hiding on the island. After conducting an investigation, they were able to locate him at a residence on Hospital Street in Frederiksted. Noel was arrested without incident and charged as a fugitive from justice.
Following his arrest, Noel was taken to the Police Administrative Building in Mars Hill, Frederiksted, where he was booked. No bail has been set for Noel, and he will remain in custody until he appears before a judge. He was subsequently transported to the John Bell Correctional Facility.
Noel is scheduled to appear in court for an Advice of Rights hearing on Monday.
The arrest of Noel highlights the strong cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies in tracking down and apprehending fugitives who attempt to evade justice by crossing state lines.
