ST. JOHN — The territory recorded its first homicide for 2021 late Friday, Jan 1., representing the first shooting leading to a death in the USVI for the new year. The territory ended 2020 with 48 homicides.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima, on Friday at 11:42 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call of shots fired in Cruz Bay, in the vicinity of Pine Peace. Officers traveled to the location and found an unresponsive Black male who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Technicians on the scene concluded that the victim had no vital signs.
The victim was identified by family members as 28-year-old Lessroy Gumbs, according to the news release.
