ST. CROIX — The mother of a minor student was arrested for disturbance of the peace on Tuesday after police responded to a fight at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School.

On March 14, police were alerted to a fight involving four minor female students. When officers arrived on campus they were informed that school monitors had broken up the fight and brought the students to the main office. The mother of one of those students, identified as Marylin Bermudez, approached one of the responding officers when she arrived on campus, saying that she needed to make a report.

That officer watched the woman walk towards the office, followed shortly afterward by two of the monitors. Soon, the officer said, a raised female voice began sounding from the direction of the office. The officer went to take a closer look, and saw the mother cursing at another parent, waving her hand in the air. By the time the officer entered the main office, the woman was being escorted to the conference room by the monitors.

School officials as well as the minor students and some of their parents gathered in the school’s conference room. The mother in question scolded one of the school’s administrators for not having a parental conference sooner. When the administrator asked her who the students had made the complaint to, the woman did not respond, but kept yelling and cursing, despite being asked to stop. She was told that she was causing a disturbance and disrupting the learning environment.

In the officer’s presence, the irate mother continued to shout and pound on the table. After numerous attempts at calming her down, Marylin Bermudez was placed under arrest and charged with disturbance of the peace. She was scheduled to appear for her advice of rights hearing on Wednesday March 15, 2023. As of press time, no pre-trial release order had been uploaded to the Court’s public access website.
