ST. CROIX — A Mon Bijou man was charged on Friday with unauthorized possession of a firearm and was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility after failing to make bail, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.
According to the V.I.P.D. news release, 23-year-old Darius George Jr. was arrested pursuant to a warrant issued by the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands.
Mr. Derima said officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by George on Midland Road in Estate Calquohoun. The vehicle was subsequently impounded, and officers obtained a search warrant for the vehicle.
A firearm was discovered in the vehicle during the search, according to the release, resulting in the attainment of an arrest warrant for George. George was unable to post the $25,000 bail.
St. Croix District Chief of Police Sidney Elskoe used this arrest to warn residents against possessing illegal firearms. “We will continue to arrest anyone who possess firearms without going through the proper channels. If you have an illegal firearm, our officers will arrest you and take that illegal gun off the street,” he said.
