ST. CROIX — A St. Croix man was taken into custody after a substantial amount of marijuana was found in his vehicle during a traffic stop, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.
According to the V.I.P.D. news release, on Thursday at roughly 6:28 p.m., 22-year-old Carl S. Cornelius of Concordia Villas was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute; and obstructing, delaying, or interfering an officer in the discharge of his duties.
Officers working as part of the Virgin Islands Crime Initiative conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by Cornelius at a gas station in Estate Plessen, said Mr. Derima. During the traffic stop, Cornelius exited the vehicle and attempted to evade officers on foot. When Cornelius was eventually captured, he was found with a large amount of marijuana. Other drug paraphernalia was also found in the vehicle.
Unable to make bail of $7,500, Cornelius was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
St. Croix District Chief of Police Sidney Elskoe praised the continued success of the Virgin Islands Crime Initiative. “Our officers work diligently to find those in our community who illegally possess firearms and drugs. We will continue to pound the pavement to arrest them,” Chief Elskoe said.
