ST. JOHN — A St. John man who was shot by police Friday morning after he pointed a rifle at officers has been formally charged, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.
The man, 46-year-old Alex Louis Camsel of Estate Pastory, St. John was arrested immediately after his release from the Schneider Regional Medical Center on April 27. Camsel was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at the medical facility after he was shot by police when he pointed a rifle at officers, according to police.
He was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and damage to vehicle.
Camsel is accused of assaulting a female victim by hitting her with a rock on April Friday. The victim required medical attention at the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center for her injuries from the assault. Officers responding to the location of the assault observed Camsel in possession of a rifle, which the suspect then pointed at officers, Mr. Derima said.
Unable to make bail of $100,000, Camsel was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
