ST. THOMAS — A man caught with suspected marijuana in his luggage was arrested at the Cyril E. King airport on Saturday.

According to court documents, police were called to the airport on Saturday evening by Customs and Border Protection officials, who told them that a routine canine inspection had identified a large lavender or light blue piece of luggage as containing a controlled substance.

A man identified as D’Jon Heyliger reportedly collected the suitcase from the exterior baggage claim carousel and was leaving the baggage claim area when he was stopped by CBP officers. Heyliger admitted that the bag was his, and upon opening the suitcase, the customs officials found four vacuum-sealed plastic bags containing what turned out to be 28.28 pounds of a green, leafy substance that subsequently tested positive for marijuana.

Heyliger was detained until police arrived, at which point he was taken into custody. Investigations revealed that last Thursday, the Orlando, Florida resident flew from his hometown to San Francisco, California. The following night, he flew from San Francisco to St. Thomas, with a layover in Washington, D.C. The luggage containing the contraband was checked on the United Airlines flight from San Francisco.

He was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and remanded into custody until his advice of rights hearing on August 21.

In court on Monday, Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull drafted an order for Heyliger’s pre-trial release that includes a cash bail component of $3000. No further details of his release conditions have been uploaded to the court’s public access web portal as of press time.
