ST. CROIX — The V.I. Dept. of Justice has announced that a man wanted in Florida on sexual assault charges was arrested on St. Croix in Estate Calquohoun Thursday morning by V.I. D.O.J. agents.
Jose Angel Garcia, 36, has been charged by the state of Florida with being a fugitive from justice. He was arrested on St. Croix at approximately 8:15 a.m. Thursday, the D.O.J. said.
The D.O.J. said his status was discovered when a V.I. Police Department officer entered his name into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and a result returned showing that Garcia had an outstanding arrest warrant in Marion County, Florida for engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor and unlawful acts of sexually transmitted diseases.
The D.O.J. said the Florida arrest warrant has been pending since September 26, 2017.
After notification that Garcia was in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office asked that he be held for extradition. Garcia was unarmed at the time of his arrest, and the arrest was made without incident, the D.O.J. said.
V.I. Attorney General Denise George commended the D.O.J. agents for their work in the arrest of Garcia. “Our D.O.J. agents play an integral role in the Dept. of Justice," she said. "They have the law enforcement authority to seek and execute arrests and extraditions and I thank them for all the work they do to keep our community safe."
Garcia will appear before a magistrate judge at the Superior Court on St. Croix today for his advisement hearing.
