ST. CROIX — A man succumbed to injuries sustained after being shot multiple times Wednesday morning while performing landscaping work at the Bethlehem Village housing community, the V.I. Police Department has announced.

V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte said that at approximately 9:40 a.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received calls of shots fired and a man down.

Police traveled to the area and observed the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body lying on the ground in front of an apartment. Officers provided emergency medical care until emergency medical technicians arrived.

Upon the arrival of EMTs to the location, they continued providing medical services and transported the victim to the Juan Luis Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. The victim, however, succumbed to his injuries.

He was identified as 24-year-old Jorge Luis Saldana of Aureo Diaz.

The V.I.P.D. said Saldana was performing landscaping work when he was approached by a man dressed in all black with his face covered. The suspect then shot Saldana multiple times before fleeing the immediate area.

The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information about this incident to send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers USVI here.
