ST. THOMAS — A man was shot to death in the vicinity of Louie's Market in Smith Bay late Wednesday afternoon, with the victim's body lying on the ground near the establishment's steps, according to images of the scene examined by the Consortium.
The V.I. Police Department told the Consortium following an inquiry that the 911 Emergency Call Center received notification of a shooting near Louie's Market at about 5:48 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were immediately dispatched to the location and upon their arrival, they met an unresponsive black male who appeared to have sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body.
When emergency medical technicians arrived to the scene, they concluded that the victim had no vital signs, according to police.
He was identified by next of kin as 26-year-old T’Quan Vanholten. Vanholten's death was the territory's 11th homicide for 2022 and the 3rd on St. Thomas for the year. St. Croix has experienced 7 homicides this year, the latest being a 21-year-old man who was gunned down in his yard in Barren Spot last week.
