ST. CROIX — A man who was released from the Golden Grove Correctional Facility Friday after serving 13 years in prison for the murder of Johan Andrews, a homicide that occurred at the John F. Kennedy Housing Community in 2009, was shot and killed in the Harbor View housing community less than a day after being released, V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte has announced.
According to the V.I.P.D. release, the 911 Emergency Call Center received notification of shots fired in Harbor View at 1:17 a.m. Saturday. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival, met an unresponsive black male lying in the vicinity of the housing community's business office in the garden bed.
The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and head, and succumbed to his injuries. Multiple spent shell casings were collected on the crime scene, according to the V.I.P.D.
The male individual was identified by next of kin as 32-year-old Shawn Joseph. The V.I.PD. said Joseph was incarcerated under the name Akeem Williams, and that prior to his release his name was officially changed to Shawn Joseph.
The police department has launched an investigation into the homicide, and the Criminal Investigation Bureau is asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of a suspect or suspects to call the CIB tip line at 340-778-4950, 911, or send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers USVI here.
Update: After issuing the press release to the media, the V.I.P.D. said it was contacted by the V.I. Bureau of Corrections which stated that the deceased had served his time and released from prison entirely, and not on parole. We've updated the story to reflect the correction issued by the police department.
