ST. THOMAS — A man was shot dead in St. Thomas on Tuesday afternoon during a property dispute with his neighbor, V.I.P.D. Public Information Toby Derima has confirmed to the Consortium.
According to a preliminary investigation by the VIPD, 62-year-old Oliver Christian, Jr. was shot dead by Alphonso Wade III, age 56, during a dispute that involved access to land property. Mr. Derima told the Consortium that the men were neighbors, and that police were still investigating the matter as of Wednesday afternoon to determine what, exactly, led to the shooting. The suspect, Mr. Derima said, was still being questioned by police as of Wednesday.
Officers had traveled to the area and found Mr. Christian unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Emergency medical technicians on the scene concluded he did not have any vital signs.
Mr. Wade, from West Caret Bay St. Thomas, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter.
Unable to post bail of $125,000, he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
