ST. CROIX — A man was shot multiple times this morning and left for dead at the Louis E. Brown housing community in Estate Paradise, the Consortium has learned. V.I.P.D. Spokesman Toby Derima later confirmed the homicide, and said the victim succumbed to his injuries about two hours later at the Juan F. Luis Hospital.

Mr. Derima said the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call from someone at about 7:48 a.m. This person said she was on the phone talking to the victim while he was at the housing community. While they were communicating, she heard gunshots through the phone. The victim then said he was being attacked, according to Mr. Derima.

Officers were dispatched to the scene of the crime and found the victim with gunshot wounds. He was transported to JFL by ambulance, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified by next of kin as 28-year-old Jonathan Fontanelle.
