ST. THOMAS — With two criminal cases from earlier this summer still pending, Clifton King is facing charges in two additional burglary cases after police say surveillance footage linked him to break-ins at Percy’s Bus Stop restaurant and bar and Forever Pink Spa and Salon.
The new cases add to a series of arrests dating to early June and have left King facing five counts of third-degree burglary along with larceny, stolen-property, unlawful-entry and other charges across the separate matters. Between four initial court appearances, bail has been set at a combined $100,000, although only $2,450 is required in cash, with the remainder secured through unsecured bonds.
King’s first arrest came in early June, after police said surveillance footage captured him burglarizing Red’s Hang Out in Annas Fancy. He was released on bail approximately two weeks later.
He was arrested again in mid-August following the armed robbery of two people. Police reportedly found King a short distance away selling one of the stolen iPhones. He was charged in connection with possessing stolen property and was again released on bail.
His next arrest came Monday as a VIPD officer investigated an incident at Percy’s Bus Stop restaurant and bar. Surveillance footage from the establishment reportedly showed an intruder rummaging through the business and removing beverages from a refrigerator.
The investigating officer said the person on the video was familiar to him.
“I recognized the male as Mr. Clifton King, an individual with whom I have had multiple prior encounters during my tenure with the Virgin Islands Police Department,” the officer wrote in the police report.
While King was at the Criminal Investigation Bureau on Monday, where police say he was refusing to be processed in connection with the latest arrest, a second officer investigating another series of break-ins recognized him in surveillance footage from Forever Pink Spa and Salon.
The salon had reportedly been burglarized several times between August 10 and 13. Police say the footage showed King smashing a southern window, entering the business at least four times and removing several items.
That investigation resulted in another set of charges, including multiple counts of burglary and unlawful entry, along with contempt of court.
Across the pending cases, Mr. King now faces five counts of third-degree burglary, two counts of grand larceny, multiple counts of unlawful entry, two counts of buying, receiving or possessing stolen property, petit larceny, trespass, destruction of property and contempt of court.
The repeated court appearances have also resulted in increasingly restrictive release conditions. Magistrates initially ordered Mr. King to undergo a psychological evaluation through the V.I. Department of Health and subsequently directed him to comply with the medication and treatment regimen recommended following that assessment.
His required check-ins with the Department of Health’s Mental Health Division and the probation office have also increased from once to twice weekly.
King is scheduled to return to court on September 4, when he is expected to be arraigned in the case involving the stolen iPhone.
